" We are not thieves or shameful / or something to be hidden away / ... we're just people. " (p.118)
This quote is about how people then used to be Segregated and whites only places still existed. But at this t
ime Segregation became illegal in the state of South Carolina. But the people who used to walk into a "white only" stores will be forced to endure humiliation and the workers who work there would make sure they do not steal because they just assumed because your African American and black you are a thieve which is unbelievably dumb because you can't just who someone is based of their own skin color which they were born in. But this quote highlights how Jackie and her family went through just by going into stores or just outside they were judged because of their skin color and people treated them differently. But after it became illegal when they went outside they were treated as normal people and the color of their skin did not matter.
"We do not know yet / who we are fighting / and what we are fighting for. "(p.146)
This quote is about how when her mother leaves Jackie and her siblings would have to become a Jehovah's Witness. Their grandmother used to tell them that they should use the Bible to protected themselves from harm by using the bible as their sword and shield. But when she told them that they did not understand because they were so young. But this tells us that their grandmother's has a lot of love for the Bible and that one day her grandchildren will have to stand up and fight for themselves in some way. But overall the grandmother wants her grandchildren to be safe no matter what and they should learn how to protect themselves whether its by using the Bible or their brains. But overall I admire how much they love each other because they all care about each other so much.
